Joan - I remove comments that are spam, that are defamatory, that are adult in nature.

If someone's just sworn then I sometimes will just edit a word out if it's a very offensive word but if it's a more 'mild' word (don't want to go into details here) I'll leave it.

On spam comments, I see no problem in deleting a comment that adds no value even if I'm not completely sure if its spam.

Guest posts - I am pretty fussy, I only accept about 10% of what I'm pitched and am not afraid to edit them for spelling, grammar or formatting. I'd never change the actual content/meaning though without talking to an author. I do sometimes add 'notes from Darren' at the end or start of posts to put my opinion/experience.

I never publish guest posts that appear elsewhere online. I don't want to risk being penalized for duplicate content and want my blogs to be known as having unique and original content.

Darren Rowse

Susan - yes hanging out in other blogs/forums to see what questions are being asked is one way. Remembering your own 'beginner days' on your topic can be good too. I remember in my early days actually approaching the few readers I had to ask them if they had any questions/problems I could solve.

I used to read other blogs in my niche an hour or so a day when I started out. I had the luxury of having the time to do it - I'd spend at least an hour or so a week if possible.

I'm not that familiar with the ins and outs of ezines but if it's putting content online regularly then it may duplicate your efforts. If it's more of an email newsletter then I think it can really help to drive traffic to your blog.

How many words will keep the attention of a blog reader best? Is there a standard for this?

How do you come up with the survey topics for your blog? Do you, later, report the results of a survey?

I've heard that posting once a week is a minimum for a blog. How do you feel about this?

Joan Stewart

Thanks for your detailed response, Darren. It's much appreciated.

Great interview. I started my blog after reading the first edition and I've never looked back. I only have 1000 readers a day but they are raving fans. I can't thank you guys enough for being that moral compass. None of this stuff is rocket science but your ability to say the right thing is inspirational.

I have one question that is off topic but is a bloggers problem that needs solving, perhaps in a post of it's own. How can bloggers best use video content to stimulate readers? Video cameras are everywhere. You've probably got one in your pocket right now on a phone. Practical issues and content delivery are great topics to cover in a future post.

Keep up the great work guys.

Darren and Chris, Is it difficult to set up a forum on a blog? I currently use Typepad for my blog, and like it a lot. I have not seen applications that allow a forum that people can sign on and contribute too. Thanks.

Julius

I enjoyed this interview a lot and took down lots of notes. Thanks!

Darren Rowse

Cindy - I always say to the writers on my blogs - use as many words as you need to use to solve the problem of your readers and then stop talking.

I don't believe in aiming for word limits or specific lengths and as a result my posts tend to be a mixture of long and short.
