Zan,

You can actually use your own domain name with Blogger (blogspot). However, I think you'll be happy with a switch to TypePad because it really is so easy to use and customization is a snap. In Chapter 11 of TypePad for Dummies Shannon explains how to use TypePad's theme and design features for a customized look.

In addition, TyepPad has a great community online. Check out the Everything TypePad Blog (everything.typepad.com) and the Get Satisfaction TypePad User Forum (getsatisfaction.com/sixapart/products/sixapart_typepad).

To help you promote your book, start interacting with others via the TypePad Profile feature. You can follow other TypePad users, find blogs that interest you, etc.

Thank you for this post. I have a question and it may be a silly question. I have worked with WordPress and Blogger, but I now have a client that has a Blog on Moveable Type. Is Moveable Type and TypePad the same?

drmark.draper@gmail.com

I'm about ready to start newspaper advertising for my new small retail business. I'll have a website and want to blog but am not sure how to integrate them. I can promote both the blog and website in the weekly newspaper ads but I'm not sure about how to tie all this together.

Would the typepad tips help with other servers? I want to make changes to my blog without losing all that I have built up, if I were to switch to another server.

Dear Melanie and Shannon:

I'm launching a new website (which I want to build in WordPress), and wanted your opinion(s) on which theme package to use. Right now I'm vacillating between the developer packages of Thesis and Headway. Any suggestions or pros/cons?

Hello Melanie & Shannon, I am a WAHM with an online based business, thanks for taking the time for a fellow mom! I started blogging using Blogger and recently became aware of a stumbling block. I would like to use my blog as a platform for promoting a weekly giveaway. However, with Blogger it came to my attention that there is no way for an individual to comment as well as leave an email address privately. Is that a correct assumption or is this a feature I am not aware of? I've considered WordPress.com (not .org) which I believe has the email address feature. Not sure. What are the differences between WordPress.com and TypePad, other than the cost. I appreciate your help!

Sheila, that's not a silly question at all! With so many blogging platforms available, it's hard to keep track of what's what and which is which.

Movable Type is not the same as TypePad, but they are both owned by Six Apart. Each is a separate product. Movable Type is similar to WordPress.org in that you have much more control over your code and it is housed on your own server instead of on the Six Apart servers (like TypePad).

Sally, I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Do you want to know if our tutorials in the book are relevant to another platform like Blogger or WordPress? If that's the case, then no, I'm sorry. The book is filled to the brim with tutorials on how to use TypePad efficiently, though! We do provide many tips on blogging in general (e.g., a basic overview of blogging, blogging best practices and etiquette, building community, etc.), but the tutorials are TypePad specific.

Apryl,

I've been using Thesis for a while and I like it. The help forums are extensive and really useful. I haven't had any issues with upgrades of the theme either.

Though I've not used Headway, but I have three good friends who are well-versed in WP themes and though they say they have used the theme and it's fine, there have been some issues with upgrades.

If you haven't looked into it yet, you may want to try Genesis. Again, I haven't used it myself, but those who have are raving.

Hope that helps!

Hi I'm new to blogging. I been blogging for 2 months now & only blog in notes on my Facebook page. But, to my suprise I have been getting lots of visits, I have a rating between 400 - 361 & 5 stars &, I didn't really know what I was doing! I am a Health & Wellness Consultant & Success Coach in MLM. I blog about natural health alternatives because this is what my business is about. Is this how you business blog, Should this be my main focus, if not what should I be blogging about? I leave my business website after every blog, should I be doing that? Also, very few of my readers are leaving comments if any, what can I do to solve this problem? Once I understand how blogging works I will probably venture into Typepad.
