There's a reason the release of the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still will sustain movie ticket success even though it's a remake. Even if you're too young or can't remember the original, there's a reason people will flock to see it:
The message is crucial and relevant for today's economic and environmental crises. The details have changed, the 'how' of the plot is different, but the 'why' is pertinent to our daily lives and how we misuse our planet's resources.
There's a lesson here for business blog authors, bear with me.
The original movie's premise (1951) was that an invading race of super-robots was trying to protect the earth from being destroyed by our use of nuclear war power. The remake focuses on our exploiting of the earth's energy resources.
Here's the lesson for your business blogs: Even though you change your content to post new material as often as possible, never stray from the 'why' you write, why you blog.
We see business bloggers go off on tangents in an effort to provide interesting content, but they forget the basics. It's better to repurpose and republish your core messages than to try to be more original.
James Chartrand writes about blogging basics on Copyblogger: Why You Should Get Back to Basics With Your Blog. Here's an excerpt:
The problem is that bloggers focus so much on taking content to the next level that they forget the next level is sometimes just a step back.
Basic information is still very crucial in the blogosphere.
Millions of new users are surfing the Internet right now. Each day, people who have spent less than 5 hours of their life on the Internet are traveling around in absolute awe, filling up their minds with this brand new world.
These new readers... are ready and primed to receive what you have to give. ...They’re listening to what you have to say, and they’re soaking up everything they read.
If they find concepts that they aren’t yet ready to understand, they’ll click away. If they haven’t learned the basics, they’ll be confused by complexities. If they read about great ideas but don’t even have a foundation to start from, they’ll get frustrated.
Talk over their heads, and you’ll lose them.
In other words, you must meet readers where they're at and provide solutions to their needs. In 2008, more people are concerned about the earth's dwindling energy resources and how we're going to sustain healthy living than the dangers of nuclear war, although that will always be a concern.
Just like the remake of a classic sci-fi movie, figure out how can you re-run your core blog posts and still stay in touch with your readers' needs and concerns.
Get back to blogging basics. Review your cornerstone content and make it resonate with current challenges of your readers.
