A big round of 'amens' to Drew McLellan with his post 5 musts of business blogging over on Drew's Marketing Minute blog. I discovered Drew's helpful messages because he is on the list of Top 42 Content Marketing blogs over on Alltop.
This is exactly what Denise and I tell our new blog clients who are eager to just jump right in and start blogging: "Hold your horses. Stop and think before you begin to blog." We don't like to see our clients crash and burn and become blogging drop outs.
At a minimum, do these 5 things for your business blog:
- You must have a clear purpose
- Listen at least twice as much as you write
- Jump into conversations and add value
- Write and then write some more
- Be in it for the long haul
Because it's so easy to set up a blog and just start posting, many professionals go at it with passion and fury - and then get disappointed.
There's nothing wrong with their writing: often they are smart and successful experts in their fields.
But if you want to see real business results for your blog, you owe it to yourself to learn best practices. It's not exactly rocket science, but there's more to it that you might think.
Reading an ebook on how to blog isn't enough. In fact, reading our own Build a Better Blog ebook probably isn't enough. That's why we're releasing the newly revised 3rd edition as part of a comprehensive Better Business Blogging learning system.

Hey gang -
Great stuff!
I've been blogging for a while and this wisdom is a great reminder to stay focused, keep it simple, participate in... and support other... conversations that are happening... and stick with it.
Keep up the great work!
I needed it today!
