In talking with Tris Hussey on last night's Conversations with Experts teleseries, we asked the question: What's the best way to get more traffic to your blog?
I love his answer: "Post, post, post; and link, link, link." How simple is that! We have been recommending that if you want to increase the number of visitors to your blog, start writing more, like every day. I recently did this for CoachEzines.com, and doubled traffic with in a week.
Here's an often overlooked step, however. Before you save your blog post, look it over for these four places you can insert some link power:
- Any name
- Any word or concept that could use a definition
- Any book
- Any quote, or borrowed concept, or web page that inspired you
Look over your post and where you see a name, link to their blog or website. If they are well known, link to their page on Wikipedia. Any word, or concept, or new thing, link to its definition in Wikipedia. Any book, use your affiliate link to link to the page where the book is found on Amazon. (You can also right click on the book image, save to your computer, insert the image file for the book cover to illustrate your post.)
Of course, any time you are inspired by an article, a blog post or other web page, email, or ezine, always link generously to the person's site. That is common courtesy AND smart. They will love you back.
We still get new blogging clients who are apprehensive about linking to other resources. "Won't readers leave my site and go to the other site? What if they are competitors?"
You know they will be more appreciative of your expertise if you are generous. Readers will find your competitors anyway. Better to act unafraid and magnanimous. Well, you can be smart about this too. Like linking to people who don't do exactly what you do, and who don't have what you have.
